Early Warning Siren System Tests Set For Surry Nuclear Power Station

This information is intended for broadcasters. We do not handle inquires about siren tests from the general public. Please contact Dominion Energy or VDEM directly.

Full-scale tests of the Early Warning Siren System (EWSS) surrounding the Surry Power Station are scheduled for approximately 11:10 am on these dates:

  • Wednesday, March 10, 2021
  • Wednesday, June 9, 2021
  • Wednesday, September 8, 2021
  • Wednesday, December 8, 2021

A steady three-minute tone will be sounded at 61 siren locations within a 10-mile radius of the Surry Nuclear Power Station operated by Virginia Power.

A dispatcher from either James City County or Surry County, in conjunction with the Emergency Operations Center of Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) in Richmond, will activate the system.

Full scale siren tests consist of a single three-minute activation and are conducted quarterly, on the second Wednesday of the month.

The alerting system signifying an Actual emergency at Surry Power Station consists of four separate, three-minute activations, each separated by a one-minute silent interval. (Total elapsed time for Actual emergency notification is 15 minutes.)

The Early Warning Siren System alerts the public to tune to their local radio or television Emergency Alert System (EAS) for information to follow in the event of a real emergency. The complete text of the Virginia Radiological Emergency Response Plan is available here.
